As a result of the first lockdown in 2020, I was suddenly out of work. There was nothing left to do in the outdoors. In order to pay for my training as a UIAGM/IVBV/IFMGA mountain guide, I started looking for a new source of income. Through my mountaineering network I ended up at Height Safety Support. I really like the work and it has many parallels to mountaineering, sneakily. "One of the most beautiful things in mountaineering is watching the sun rise from the top of a mountain. With a little imagination, this is no different from the roof of an old church".

There are also similarities on a technical level. In mountaineering, you regularly have to make a previously unknown situation safe by improvising with the material you have on hand. Much of Height Safety Support's work takes place on existing buildings. Often when these were designed, no explicit thought was given to working safely at height. So the first task on any job is to 'rig' a safe working situation with the safety equipment available. This is different on every building and makes the work very interesting. At Height Safety Support, safety comes first. There is no compromise because something has to be done quickly. I never felt like I was in a hurry to make a situation safe. Safety requires a little more time sometimes.
